Level Information and Descriptions

The Proctor Area Youth Baseball Board and other regional area youth baseball associations updated levels of play starting in 2019.  Below are descriptions of those changes.  These changes were made to help offer the best opportunities for all abilities and keep our leagues in line with other area associations.

Instructional: Pre-K & Kindergarten - Formally T-Ball. Goal for this level is to have players learn the fundamentals of baseball. The tee will be used for instruction and for players that do not have the ability to hit a thrown baseball. Safe sport (softer) baseballs are used at this level. Goal is to have all players hitting balls thrown by the coach when they have shown proper form and ability to hit from the Tee.

Coach Pitch: 1st and 2nd Grade - Goal for this level is to prepare for play at the rookies level. Same rules as are currently used for coaches pitch.  Firm on 6 hittable pitches, with coaches option for strikeout or tee.  NO WALKS!  Rationale: Games need to be sped up, so that more kids get opportunities for plate appearances (firm on 6 pitches).  Continued use of Tee allows for more defensive plays in the field, which allows for fielding development, base running experience.  Option for no tee, if coach feels a player is developed enough to be hitting pitches, they have the option to begin transition to dealing with strike outs.  “Strikeouts” should not count against the “out total” for that inning.  Outs should be made in the field… again focus on defensive development. Safe sport baseballs are used. Goal is to prepare kids for use of hardball and have kids pitch to them at the rookies level. Time should be spent with 8 year olds learning how to pitch the baseball.

Rookies 3rd Grade (Year 2 Coach Pitch may be evaluated to play Rookies)   Same set up as majors,  but no walks and no going on home on past ball. There are run limits, 4 outfielders, etc.
Rationale:  This continues to be a good model for the transition from Coach Pitch Baseball to “Real” baseball, especially for first year kids coming from Coach Pitch. Hard baseballs are used.

Majors: 4th and 5th grade (Rookie level players can be evaluated to play Majors). Same rules as currently exist for Majors play. Last level of play before field size get bigger. No stealing until pitch leaves pitchers hand. Dropped third strike in play. 3 outfielders. Still no leading off or leaving early on the base. Games are fast paced and talent is a true part of the game. All players should be able to throw the ball hard and accurate along with be able to field routine grounders and catch pop flies.

Intermediates 6th and 7th Grade (2nd year Majors players can be evaluated to play Intermediates). First year on a bigger field that is located at Twig. Base path is longer by 15 feet (75 foot base path) and mound is further back. Leading off is allowed and stealing is also allowed.

Juniors: 8th and 9th Grade (2nd Year Intermediate can be evaluated to play Juniors). First year on full size baseball field. Games played at either Pike Lake or High School turf field.
